Die einsitzige Viper Mk. II gilt als der berühmteste Raumüberlegen-
heitsjäger der Kolonialen Streitkräfte. Die ersten Exemplare wurden
kurz vor Beginn des ersten Zylonenkrieges in Dienst gestellt. Die
speziell für den Einsatz auf Kampfsternen entworfene Mk. II ist die
bekannteste aller Viper Serien. Sie leistete ausgezeichnete Dienste
während des ersten Zylonenkrieges und gewann dadurch besondere
Anerkennung in den gesamten Zwölf Kolonien. Sie wird als einer
der Gründe angesehen, warum die Kolonialen Streitkräfte nicht von
den Zylonen geschlagen wurden, was ihre besondere Berühmtheit
erklärt. Die Mk. II blieb noch einige Zeit nach dem Ende des Krieges
in Dienst, wurde aber nach und nach durch neuere Modelle abgelöst.
Zur Zeit des erneuten Ausbruchs zylonischer Feindseligkeiten war
die Mk. VII die neueste Version der Viper. Nur dem Umstand, daß
sich ein Geschwader der Mk. II auf dem kurz vor der Ausmusterung
stehenden Kampfstern Galactica befand, ist es zu verdanken, daß
rund vierzig Jahre nach den ersten Zylonenkrieg noch mehrere
Maschinen des Mk. II Typs erhalten sind.
Der rund 8,40 Meter lange Jäger wird von einem Piloten gesteuert,
ist sowohl für den Flug im Weltraum- als auch in der Atmosphäre
geeignet, verfügt über zwei kinetische Energiewaffen sowie Außenlast-
stationen für Raketen, Munitionsbehälter und andere Ausrüstung unter
den Flügeln. Allerdings ist der Treibstoffverbrauch im atmosphärischen
Flug um ein Vielfaches höher als im Vakuum des Weltraums: um
einen konstanten Auftrieb zu gewährleisten, muss der Antrieb ständig
laufen, um die Viper in Bewegung zu halten. Zudem läßt sich die
Viper ungleich schwerer bei einem Atmosphärenflug manövrieren,
insbesondere bei geringen Geschwindigkeiten.
Der Aufbau der schlanken Viper kann in zwei Sektionen aufgeteilt
werden, bestehend aus der von der Nase bis zum Ende des Cockpit
verlaufenden Bugsektion mit seinen Steuer- und Sensoreinrichtungen
sowie dem Heckbereich. In letzterem Abschnitt befinden sich die
Triebwerke, Treibstofftanks, die Flügel und Heckflosse. Das Cockpit
einer Viper steht unter Druck und wird außerdem beheizt. Trotzdem
tragen die Piloten während des Einsatzes einen speziellen Fluganzug,
der über ein eigenes Lebenserhaltungssystem verfügt. Das Lebenser-
haltungssystem ist, zusammen mit den Gurten, in die Rückenlehne
des Pilotensitzes eingebaut. Nach einem Ausstieg trennt sich die
Rückenlehne vom Rest des Sitzes und wird damit zu einem Rucksack,
in dem auch ein Fallschirm integriert ist.
The single-seat Viper Mk. II is reputed to be the most famous space
superiority fighter used by the Colonial forces. The first examples
went into service shortly before the start of the first Cylon war. The
Mk. II specially designed for use on Battlestars is the best known of
all the Viper series. It saw exemplary service during the first Cylon
War, which earned it particular recognition throughout the twelve
colonies. It is regarded as one of the reasons why the Colonial
Forces were not beaten by the Cylons, which explains its great
fame. The Mk. II remained in service for some time after the war
ended, but was gradually replaced by later models. At the time of the
outbreak of further Cylon hostilities the Mk. VII was the latest version
of the Viper. Only the circumstance that a Mk. II squadron was
located on the Battlestar Galactica shortly before its retirement from
service is the reason why there were any Mk. II machines still in
existence some forty years after the first Cylon War.
The fighter which is about 8.40 m long is flown by one pilot, is
suitable for flight both in deep space and in planetary atmosphere,
has two kinetic energy weapons and external stations for rockets,
munitions carriers and other equipment under the wings. In
particular its fuel consumption in atmospheric flight is much higher
than in the cosmic vacuum: in order to guarantee a constant impetus
the engine must keep running in order to keep the Viper in motion.
In addition the Viper is more difficult to manoeuvre uniformly in
atmospheric flight, particularly at low speeds.
The construction of the slender Viper can be split into two sections,
consisting of the front section extending from the nose to the end of
the cockpit and containing control and sensor equipment and the
rear section. This last contains the engines, fuel tanks, wings and
tail fin. The cockpit of a Viper is pressurized and is also heated.
Despite this, when on missions the pilot wears a special flying suit
which has its own life-support system. The life-support system,
together with the safety belts, is built into the back of the pilot seat.
After an ejection, the back separates from the rest of the seat and
becomes a back-pack which also contains a parachute.
