Battlestar Galactica Battlestar Galactica
Ein Kampfstern ist ein koloniales Großkampfschiff, das die Fähigkeiten eines Flugzeugträ-
gers und eines Schlachtschiffes in sich vereint. Die ersten zwölf dieser Kampfsterne
wurden zu Beginn des ersten Zylonenkrieges gebaut, wobei jeder eine der Zwölf Kolonien
repräsentierte. Die rund 50 Jahre alte, über 1400 Meter lange Galactica ist einer dieser
ersten zwölf Kampfsterne und stand für die Kolonie Caprica. Erst nach Ausbruch der
Feindseligkeiten mit den Zylonen gingen weitere Kampfsterne in Produktion. Kampfsterne
bilden das Rückgrat der kolonialen Flotten, der größte Teilstreitkraft des Militärs der Zwölf
Kolonien. Normalerweise agieren sie nicht alleine, sondern verfügen über eine Begleitflot-
te, die sogenannte Battlestar Group, im Falle der Galactica die BSG 75. Trotz Ihrer Größe
sind die Kampfsterne extrem wendig, können selbst massive Angriffe aufgrund ihrer
robusten Konstruktion gut überstehen und verfügen selbst über beachtliches offensives
Potential. Die 24 großen Flakgeschütze, über 400 Nahverteidigungsgeschütze, mehrere
nukleare Gefechtsköpfe und mindestens vier Geschwader mit je 20 Viper belegen, daß
sie ihre Existenz Kriegszeiten verdanken. Zwar sind sie wesentlich widerstandsfähiger
als zylonische Basisschiffe, ihre beiden Überlichttriebwerke verfügen allerdings über eine
geringere Reichweite als die zylonischer Bauart.
Nach Ende des Krieges versahen die ersten Kampfsterne weiter ihren Dienst, wurden
aber zusehends durch die moderneren Typen ersetzt. Im Laufe der Jahre wurden alle
existenten Kampfsterne modernisiert und auch mit modernen Computersystemen
ausgestattet. Auch in die Galactica wurde das von Dr. Gaius Baltar und seinem
"Team" entwickelte, computergesteuerte Verteidigungssystem eingebaut. Allerdings
wurde das System auf der Galactica nie in Betrieb genommen, was ihr einen einzigarti-
gen Status in der gesamten Flotte verlieh. Nach ihrem langjährigen militärischen
Einsatz wurde entschieden, die technisch veraltete Galactica stillzulegen und in ein
Museumsschiff umzuwandeln. Zum Zeitpunkt der Zeremonie zu ihrer Ausmusterung
befindet sich nur noch eines der ursprünglichen vier Geschwader der Viper Mk. VII an
Bord. Munition ist kaum noch vorhanden, und in der schon in ein Museum umgebaute
Steuerbord-Landebucht sind lediglich 20 alte Viper Mk. II Maschinen untergebracht.
Während der Rede zur Stilllegung der Galactica beginnt der zweite Zylonenkrieg.
Da das Computersystem von Dr. Baltar nicht aktiviert ist, kann der Kampfstern nicht
von den Zylonen per Fernsteuerung lahmgelegt werden und übersteht neben der
weitaus moderneren Pegasus den Fall der zwölf Kolonien. Die Vernichtung der Flotte,
der Kolonien oder der übrigen rund 120 Kampfsterne kann die Galactica nicht mehr
verhindern. Sie bewährt sich dennoch im Kampf und ermöglicht dem Troß von knapp
75 zivilen Schiffen die Flucht in den Weltraum. Unter ihrem Feuerschutz begibt sich die
Galactica und die weniger als 50.000 letzten Überlebenden auf der Suche nach einer
legendären, nur aus Mythen bekannten 13. Kolonie namens Erde.
Wie jeder Kampstern verfügt auch die Galactica über zwei Hauptsektionen. Der erste
Teil, die Haupthülle, gliedert sich wiederum in drei Bereiche. Bugseitig befindet sich der
keilförmigen Kopfbereich, wo sich die Wassertanks und Wiederaufbereitungsanlagen
befinden. Tanks und Anlagen wurden bewußt groß angelegt, um lange Operationen,
auch über Jahre hinaus, zu ermöglichen und eine autarke Versorgung zu gewährleisten.
Dem Kopfbereich schließt sich das Mittelschiff an, das den Mechanismus zum Einfahren
der Flugdecks sowie die Verbindungen der beiden Flugdecks beherbergt. In der
Achtersektionen sind die Unterlicht- und Überlichtantriebe untergebracht, wobei sich die
vier Unterlichttriebwerke gleichmäßig um die beiden mittleren gruppieren. Die beiden
Gondeln, die die Landebuchten und Startbahnen beinhalten, bilden die zweite Sektion.
Zum Überlichtflug werden sie in das Mittelschiff hereingezogen, bei Unterlichtfahrt
wieder ausgefahren. Die Landebahnen erstrecken sich über die gesamte Länge der
Gondeln. Unter ihnen befinden sich die Hangars für die Jäger, die über Katapulte ins
Weltall geschleudert werden.
A Battlestar is a Colonial superbattleship, that combines the capabilities of an aircraft
carrier with those of a warship. The first twelve of these Battlestars were built at the
beginning of the first Cylon War, with each one representing one of the Twelve Colonies.
The Galactica, which is about 50 years old and over 1400 m long, is one of these first
twelve Battlestars and stands for the Caprica Colony. It was not until the outbreak of
hostilities with the Cylons that further Battlestars went into production. Battlestars form
the backbone of the colonial fleets, the largest joint military unit of the Twelve Colonies.
Normally they do not act alone, but have an escort fleet, the so-called Battlestar Group,
in the case of Galactica the BSG 75. Despite their size, the Battlestars are extremely
manoeuvrable, capable of withstanding massive attacks due to their robust construction
and themselves have substantial offensive potential: the 24 large anti-aircraft guns, over
400 close defence guns, multiple nuclear warheads and at least four squadrons of 20
Vipers each, to which they owe their existence in times of war. Although they have
considerably more resistance than Cylon base ships, both their super-light engines have
a shorter range than those of Cylon design.
After the end of the war the first Battlestars remained in service, but were quickly
replaced by the more modern types. Over the years all existing Battlestars were
upgraded and also equipped with modern computer systems. The Galactica also
incorporated the computer-controlled defence system developed by Dr Gaius Baltar and
his team. However the system on the Galactica never went into operation, which gave
her a unique status in the whole fleet. After long years of military service it was decided
to retire the technically obsolete Galactica and turn her into a museum ship. At the time
of the decommissioning ceremony there was only one of the original four squadrons of
Viper Mk. VIIs left on board. There was hardly any ammunition available and in the
starboard landing bay which had already been converted into a museum there were only
20 old Viper Mk IIs. The second Cylon War began during the decommissioning address
for the Galactica. As Dr Baltar’s computer system was not activated, the Battlestar could
not be immobilized by remote control by the Cylons and, together with the much more
modern Pegasus, she survived the fall of the Twelve Colonies. The Galactica could not
prevent the destruction of the fleet or about 120 other Battlestars. However, she proved
herself in battle and enabled a collection of 75 civil ships to flee into space. Under her
protective fire the Galactica and under 50,000 last survivors went in search of a
legendary 13th colony they only knew from myths - called Earth.
Like all Battlestars the Galactica has two main sections. The first part, the main hull, is
divided into three areas. In the bow section is the wedge-shaped head end where the
water tanks and recycling facilities are located. Tanks and facilities were of course of
ample size in order to make possible long-term operations that might last for years and
to guarantee self-sufficiency. The head end is linked to the amidships section which
accommodates the mechanism for retracting the flight deck and the connections for both
flight decks. The stern sections accommodate the sublight and lightspeed engines, with
the four sublight engines evenly spaced round the two middle ones. The two pods
containing the landing and launch bays form the second section. For lightspeed flight
they are retracted into the amidships section and extended for sublight flight. The landing
runways extend over the whole length of the pods. Beneath them are located the
hangars for the fighters which are launched into space by catapults.
