Sd.Kfz.165 „Hummel“ späte Version / late version Sd.Kfz.165 „Hummel“ späte Version / late version
In

The Sd.Kfz. 165 “Hummel” (Bumble Bee) was designed by the Alkett
company in 1942 and a total of 713 were built by the German iron-
works between December 1942 and March 1945. From 1943 onwards
the first Hummels were used as heavy artillery in the German tank divi-
sions. The Hummel was a combination of the 15 cm heavy field how-
itzer 18/1 and the weapon-carrier vehicle III/IV. First of all the field
howitzers were mounted on a proper Panzer IV tank chassis and later
the running gear of the Panzer IV was combined with the power
transmission of the Panzer III tank. The engine was located in the mid-
dle of the vehicle giving the 6-7-man artillery crew more room in the
fighting compartment. The fighting compartment was exactly like
that of the Sd.Kfz. 164 “Nashorn” (Rhinoceros): only protected on all
sides and open at the top to facilitate the aiming of the cannon. This
at least gave the crew protection against shrapnel and gunfire. Most
of the Hummels were used on the Eastern Front where in 1943 they
saw their first action during Operation “Citadel” at the Battle of Kursk.
From fear of low-flying Russian II-2 “Stormowik” bombers, the
Hummels were often hidden under branches and undergrowth exact-
ly like the vehicles used in France which were similarly protected
against enemy attacks. In addition to Russia and France, almost all the
large tank divisions stationed in Italy were equipped with Hummel bat-
teries consisting of 6 vehicles. If necessary the Hummel could also be
used in the direct fire role as a self-propelled assault gun or tank
destroyer. The late version shown differs from the earlier versions
mainly in its wider fighting compartment with a front section for the
driver and wireless operator.
