Das Sturmgeschütz, speziell für die Panzerjagd und die Infanterie konstruiert, war dem meist

gebauten, schweren Panzer der US Army im zweiten Weltkrieg zwar überlegen, die US

Truppen glichen dieses Manko aber durch die große Anzahl der Shermans wieder aus. Der im

Januar 1944 eingeführte Sherman M4A1 hatte trotz verbesserter 76mm Kanone und neuem

Turm weiterhin Mängel in der Panzerung. Deshalb waren auch die endlosen Kolonnen von gut

ausgerüsteten und ausgebildeten GI’s im Zusammenspiel mit den Panzern ein wesentlicher

Faktor bei der Niederwerfung Deutschlands. Basierend auf dem StuG III, mit Verbesse rungs -

vorschlägen von General Guderian, wurde das Sturmgeschütz IV auf allen Kriegsschauplätzen

eingesetzt, doch die Hauptlast der Kämpfe trug meist der einfache Infanterist. So waren diese

von den Küsten Frankreichs bis zu den Weiten Russlands im Einsatz.

The self-propelled assault gun, specially designed for anti-tank warfare and the infantry, may

have outclassed the most built US Army heavy tank in the Second World War, but the US

troops counterbalanced these shortcoming by greater numbers of Sherman tanks. The

Sherman M4A1 that was introduced in January 1944, despite an improved 76 mm cannon and

a new turret, still lacked adequate armour. Consequently the endless columns of well

equipped and trained GI’s, in combination with the tanks, were a critical factor in the defeat

of Germany. Based on the StuG III with improvements suggested by General Guderian, the

assault gun IV was used in all theatres of war, but the main burden of combat was usually

borne by the ordinary infantryman. These were in use from the French coast to the distant

expanses of Russia.
