Das Sd. Kfz. 9 – schwerer Zugkraftwagen 18 t ist eine der

bekanntesten, deutschen Zugmaschinen des 2. Weltkriegs. Die

endgültige Ausführung wurde von 1939-44 mit einer Stück -

zahl von ca. 2.500 Einheiten bei den Fahrzeug- und Moto -

renwerken (FAMO) in Breslau gebaut und zur Bergung von

Panzern, sowie zum Transport von schwerer Artillerie (z.B.

21cm Mörser 18) und sperrigen Gütern aller Art eingesetzt.

Der 12-Zylinder Motor von Maybach leistete 250 PS und mach-

te das 8,30m große Ungetüm zur stärksten Zugmaschine der

Wehrmacht. Besonders die Feldinstandsetzungstrupps konn-

ten auf das starke Halbkettenfahrzeug nicht verzichten, denn

ab 1942, als man erstmals den Tiger I einsetzte, war die Zug -

maschine wichtiger denn je, da man für diesen schweren

Panzer immer drei und mehr Halbketten zur Bergung benötig-

te. Um ein wegrutschen bei der Bergung zu verhindern, wur-

den einige Fahrzeuge am Heck mit einem Erdsporn ausgerü-

stet, der in die Erde eingerammt, für Standsicherheit und Ent -

lastung der Winde sorgte.

Für den Straßentransport von schwerem Gerät wurde mög-

lichst der Sonder Anhänger 116 benutzt. Für den Werkstatt -

betrieb gab es zwei Ausführungen mit einem Kran auf der

Pritsche, eine mit einem 6t Kran und einen benzin-elektrisch

angetriebenen Kran mit der erstaunlichen Hubkraft von 10t.

Wegen der angestiegenen Gewichte der zu bergenden Panzer

schweißten die Besatzungen oft zusätzliche Stahlplatten und

Stoßstangen vor oder an die Zugvorrichtungen. Die Watfähig -

keit betrug 80cm und die Zuladung war mit 2,87t angegeben.

The Sd. Kfz. 9 - 18 tonne heavy towing vehicle is one of the

best known German World War II tractors. About 2,500 of the

final version were built between 1939 and 1944 at the

Fahrzeug- und Motorenwerken (FAMO) in Breslau and were

used for tank recovery and the transport of heavy artillery (e.g.

21 cm mortar 18) and bulky goods of all kinds.

The 12-cylinder Maybach engine delivered 250 hp and made

this huge 8.30 m monster the strongest tractor used by the

German army. In particular the field maintenance troops could

not have done without this powerful half-track, because from

1942 onwards when the Tiger 1 first went into service, this

tractor became even more important as it always needed

three or more half-tracks to recover this heavy tank. To pre-

vent skidding during recovery operations some of them were

equipped with a rear earth spade that was rammed into the

ground to stabilize it and counter-balance the winch.

For transporting heavy equipment by road, wherever possible

the special trailer 116 was used. For repair operations there

were two versions with a crane on the platform, one with a 6-

tonne crane and a petrol-electric crane with an astonishing lift-

ing power of 10 tonnes. Due to the increasing weights of the

tanks to be recovered, the crews often welded additional steel

plates and bumpers in front of or onto the towing equipment.

It was claimed to have a fording capacity of 80 cm and a load-

carrying capacity of 2.87 tonnes.
