Lo can mean the room you are taking temp in is less than 17 degrees try in a warmer room .

I have exactly the same issue. I’ve tried several different batteries and get this message straight after changing.

This happened to me, too. I cured it by cleaning out the tip of the thermometer, which had developed an almost-invisible coating of earwax (yuk). Once properly cleaned, it functioned normally again.
