2.3 Roadworthiness

s Before commencing the journey, distribute the caravan payload evenly (see

chapter 3).

s When loading the caravan and when taking a rest from driving, in order to load lug-

gage or food, for example, observe the maximum permissible gross weight and cara-

van load of the towing vehicle (refer to vehicle documents).

s Ensure that the maximum permitted nose weight is not exceeded and that the mini-

mum nose weight does not fall below the minimum. Load the caravan accordingly.

s While driving with your caravan, the towing vehicle must be equipped with two exterior

rear view mirrors.

s Before commencing the journey, close all gas isolator taps and the regulator tap. Ex-

ception: If you plan to use the living area heater during the journey, leave the "Heater"

gas isolator tap and the regulator tap open.

s Before commencing the journey, ensure that all cupboard doors, the toilet door and all

drawers and flaps are secure. Engage the refrigerator door securing device.

s Before commencing the journey, close windows and skylights.

s Close all external flaps and fasten flap locks before each journey.

s Before commencing the journey, remove external supports and fully raise the corner

steadies and jockey wheel fitted to the caravan.

s During the initial journey and each time after changing a wheel, re-tighten the wheel

nuts after 50 km (30 miles). Subsequently inspect them at regular intervals in order to

ensure that they are firmly seated.

s Check tyre pressure before a journey or every 2 weeks (see chapter 13). Wrong tyre

pressure causes excessive wear and can lead to damage or even to tyre burst. You

can lose the control over the caravan.

s Tyres must not be older than 6 years as the material becomes brittle over time (see

chapter 13).

s Before commencing the journey, carry out a functional check of indicating and light-

ing equipment and the brakes.

s After the vehicle has been standing for a longer period (approx. 10 months) have the

braking and gas systems checked by an authorised specialist workshop.

s During the journey, no persons are to travel inside the caravan.

s In winter, the roof must be free of snow and ice prior to the commencement of the

journey.

s Before commencing the journey, empty the waste water tank (accessories).

s Close the television cabinet.

A caravan is made to be outside and can therefore be left outside. However, when the caravan is not in use, it is better to store it dry and covered. This extends the lifespan of the caravan. If the caravan is left outside for a long time, it can sustain damage. For example, the sun can dry out sealing rubbers and moss can form. An alternative to storage can be to put a protective cover over the caravan.
