HMS KELLY (HMS KIPLING) HMS KELLY (HMS KIPLING)
Oktober 1938 bei Hawthorn Leslie and Company in Hebburnon vom
Stapel und ging am 23. August 1939 in Dienst.
Dezember 1939 in
Dienst gestellt und in der 7. Zerstörerflottille der „Home Fleet“ eingesetzt. Seit
März 1942 der 14. Zerstörerflottille in Alexandria zugeteilt, wurde sie am 11. Mai

The HMS Kelly was a destroyer of the K Class. As smaller successors to the Tribal
Class the 24 destroyers of the J, K and N Classes were among the most up-to-
date Royal Navy warships when they went into service from 1939. The Admiralty
decided to arm them with more powerful torpedoes compared to their prede-
cessors. In addition instead of mine clearing equipment, all the destroyers
received depth charges and the latest fire control and air search radar equip-
ment.
The ships proved themselves in operation, but also suffered some heavy losses.
By the end of the war 13 destroyers of the J, K and N Classes had been lost. The
HMS Kelly was launched on 25th October 1938 by Hawthorn Leslie and
Company at Hebburn and went into service on 23rd August 1939. As the lead-
ing ship of the 5th Destroyer Flotilla she was under the command of Lord Louis
Mountbatten off the British coast, off Norway and in the Mediterranean. During
the battles off Crete HMS Kelly was attacked by several Ju 87s and sunk on 23rd
May 1941. The HMS Kipling was commissioned on 12th December 1939 and
served with the 7th Destroyer Flotilla of the Home Fleet. From March 1942 she
was assigned to the 14th Destroyer Flotilla at Alexandria and on 11th May 1942,
together with three other destroyers, she was attacked and sunk by fourteen Ju
88s off Marsa Matruh on the North African coast.
