WWI Fighter SPAD XIII WWI Fighter SPAD XIII
S.P.A.D.-Chefingenieur Louis

In service since the summer of 1916 the French SPAD VII - armed with a single
machine gun - was at the latest by the spring of 1917 out-gunned by the
German single seat fighters fitted with twin machine guns. SPAD chief engineer
Louis Bechereau who had since 1909 successfully developed racing airplanes for
the former company owner Louis Deperdussin, constructed the prototype SPAD
XIII to fit the 50 hp stronger 200 hp Hispano-Suiza 8B engine and carry two
Vickers .303 MG with an 800 round supply of ammunition. The new aircraft’s
fire-power was increased enormously with this modification although the air-
craft had become bigger and 200 kg (440 lbs) heavier. The maiden flight took
place on 4 April 1917. Although the test flights indicated an improved flight per-
formance, they also however confirmed a certain sluggishness near the ground
and some problems with the armament, engine, engine-cooling, and insufficient
field of view for the pilot. Concurrent to the ongoing production of the new
SPAD XIII C1, development of the new aircraft with many changes to almost all
of the components was extended until the end of 1917. By the start of August
only 23 aircraft had been delivered. In December 1917 the French units had 131
of the new bi-planes but constantly reported problems with the reduction gear-
ing between the engine and the propeller, which tended to break away from
the engine block complete with propeller. The British Royal Flying Corps received
their first aircraft in November 1917. Only No 23 Sqn RFC was equipped with 57
of these machines. Due to the small numbers delivered the RFC soon decided to
acquire other fighters. On 1st April 1918, total production amounted to 764 air-
craft. After the faults were eliminated this sturdily built aircraft possessed very
good dive characteristics and was fast and agile at altitudes above 1000 meters
(3000 ft). By the end of the war S.P.A.D. and a further eight licensed company’s
had produced a total of 7,300 aircraft. At this time 80 French Fighter Squadrons
were equipped with this type. From March 1918 the French aviation industry
delivered a total of 893 of these aircraft to fighter units of the United States
fighting in France.15 Aero Squadrons of USAS flew the type of aircraft and Italy
and Belgium also received some of these machines. Capt Robert Soubiran,
Commander of the US 103rd Aero Squadron, 3rd Pursuit Group, flew the SPAD
XIII until the war ended. Only in 1923 did the French Air Force relinquish use of
its last aircraft. After the war, the SPAD XIII’ were still used in the Air Forces of
the United States, Czechoslovakia, Turkey, Spain, Poland, Siam, Brazil, Uruguay,
Argentina, Greece, and Japan.
