In den späten 1970ern nahm für drei europäische NATO-Länder (Groß -

britannien, Deutschland und Italien) ein kampfstarkes Militärflugzeug

in Gestalt des Überschall-Schwenkflüglers Panavia Multi Role Combat

Aircraft („Mehrzweckkampfflugzeug“, abgekürzt „MRCA“) Form an.

Unter dem Namen Tornado bleibt es seit den frühen 1980ern das

Rückgrat der Luftstreitkräfte dieser drei Länder. Die von allen drei

Ländern benutzte Hauptversion ist die IDS (Interdictor Strike) für

Bodenangriffsziele und zur Aufklärung, wobei die Version ADV (Air

Defence Version) hauptsächlich von der RAF eingesetzt wird. Die

Deutsche Luftwaffe setzt auch die Version ECR ein (Electronic Combat

and Reconnaissance, im englischen Sprachgebrauch auch als „Wild

Weasel“ bekannt), während die königliche Luftwaffe Saudi-Arabiens

sowohl IDS- als auch ADV-Versionen in Dienst gestellt hat. Die ersten

Kampfeinsätze erfolgten während des Golfkrieges 1991, als Tornados

der RAF und Italiens viele gefährliche Einsätze gegen massiv verteidig-

te irakische Ziele flogen. Obwohl solche Einsätze nicht ohne Verluste

abgingen, hat sich das Konzept dieses für extremen Niedrigflug geeig-

neten, robusten Mehrzweckflugzeuges mit seinem hochentwickelten

Geländefolgeradar und fortschrittlichen Avionik und Verteidigungs -

systemen gut bewährt. Die RAF besitzt vier Versionen des IDS

Tornados: Die GR 1, die hier als Bausatz vorliegt, und die von den in

Deutschland stationierten Staffeln Nr. 9,14, 17 und 31 geflogen wird;

die GR1A, einen Aufklärer und die GR1B zur Bekämpfung von See -

zielen, mit denen vier weitere, in Großbritannien stationierte Staffeln

ausgestattet sind; und die verbesserte GR4. Dass die drei Nationen

umspannende Programm hat sich als großer Erfolg für die europäische

Verteidigungsindustrie erwiesen, und in den kommenden Jahren wer-

den viele weitere Verbesserungen im Bereich des Flugzeugkörpers und

der Waffen sicherstellen, dass der Tornado auch weiterhin eines der

eindrucksvollsten Kampfflugzeuge der Welt bleiben wird.

Die beiden Turbo Union RB 199 Mantelstrom-Triebwerke erzeugen mit

Nachverbrennung einen Schub von 71 kN (13.340 kp). Die Höchstge -

schwindigkeit liegt bei Mach 1,2 auf Meereshöhe. Maximale Waffen -

zuladung 9.000 kg.

A powerful and devastating force which for three European NATO

nations (UK, Germany and Italy) in the late 1970s was to become real-

ity as the supersonic swing-wing Panavia Multi Role Combat Aircraft

(MRCA); named Tornado, it has formed the backbone of air power for

three countries from the early 1980s. The main version used by all

three countries is the IDS (Interdictor Strike) for ground attack and

reconnaissance, with the ADV (Air Defence Version) mainly for Royal

Air Force service. The German Air Force also operates the ECR (“Wild

Weasel”) version, while the Royal Saudi Airforce operates IDS and ADV

versions. Combat debut came during the 1991 Gulf War when RAF and

Italian Tornados carried out many dangerous missions against heavily

defended Iraqi targets. Although such actions were not without loss-

es, the concept of this low flying, rugged multi-role aircraft, with its

sophisticated terrain-following radar and advanced avionics and

defence system, was well proven. The RAF has four versions of the IDS

Tornado; the GR1, as represented in this kit and used by Nos. 9, 14, 17

and 31 squadrons all based in Germany, the reconnaissance GR1A and

the anti-shipping GR1B equipping four other UK based squadrons; the

updated GR4 has also entered service. The tri-national programme has

proved a major success for the European defence industries and dur-

ing the coming years many more airframe and weapons updates will

ensure that Tornado remains one of the world’s most formidable com-

bat aircraft.
