1971 beteiligte sich General Dynamics an einem Programm für einen agilen, leichten Kampfjet

als Ersatz für die alten F-104 Starfighter. Die YF-16 flog erstmalig am 2. Februar 1974 und

wurde ein Jahr später von der USAF bestellt. Die Hauptmerkmale der Falcon sind der einzel-

ne, breite Lufteinlass unter der Nase und die einteilige, blasenförmige Cockpithaube, die im

Luftkampf eine perfekte Rundumsicht gewährleistet.

Der Entwicklung der F-16 schlossen sich schnell andere NATO-Staaten an, wie Belgien, die

Niederlande, Dänemark und Norwegen. Die operative Version der F-16A war mit vielen neuen

Technologien wie APG-66 Radar und Fly-by-wire-System ausgerüstet. Sie kam ab 1976 zum

Einsatz, die doppelsitzige Version F-16B hob zum ersten Mal 1977 vom Boden ab. Ab 1979

nahm sie ihren Dienst bei den Luftstreitkräften als Abfangjäger und Kampfbomber auf.

1981 stattete die USAF die leistungsfähige F-16 mit weiteren neuen Fähigkeiten aus, wie

Beyond Visual Range, Allwettertauglichkeit und Tiefflugfähigkeiten. Diese Version erhielt die

Bezeichnung F-16C Viper. Angesichts dieser neuen Fähigkeiten suchten die europäischen

Staaten, bei denen die A/B-Versionen in Dienst standen, ebenfalls Möglichkeiten zur

Verbesserung ihrer alten Maschinen.

Zwischen 1995 und 1997 führten fünf Länder das Modernisierungsprogramm MLU (Mid-Life-

Update) durch, mit dem durch strukturelle Veränderungen die Lebensdauer des Flugzeugs

verlängert und die Tragfähigkeit erhöht wurden. Updates der Bordelektronik waren die

Highlights des Programms, das neueste Systeme nutzte. Das Cockpit-Panel wurde durch drei

MFD-Bildschirme mit schwarzem Hintergrund ergänzt, um auf Nachtsicht umgeschaltet wer-

den zu können.

Äußerlich besteht die größte Veränderung der F-16 MLU (auch als F-16AM / BM bezeichnet)

in den vier IFF-Antennen vor dem Cockpit. Doch auch das Waffensystem wurde wesentlich

geändert, um das Mitführen lasergelenkter Bomben und Zielbeleuchtungsbehälter (Laser

Designator Pod), die Nutzung verschiedener Luft-Luft-Raketen für Nah- und Beyond Visual

Ranges (BVR) und von Aufklärungsbehältern oder elektronischen Störsendern zu ermögli-

chen.

Von Anbeginn des Programms berücksichtigte es alle zukünftigen Upgrade-Fähigkeiten. Seit

2000 wurden die MLU-Maschinen ständig durch neue Systeme und Updates ergänzt, um

höchste Einsatzbereitschaft zu gewährleisten. Die neueste Version der MLU F-16 kann

modernste AIM-9X, AIM-120D AMRAAM oder IRIS-T Raketen und GPS-gelenkte Bomben tra-

gen.

Die F-16AM Falcon ist weiterhin eines der am meisten eingesetzten Flugzeuge der NATO in

Europa. Zahlreiche F-16 fremder Staaten sind bei Airshows zu sehen, doch beschränken sich

die äußerlichen Unterschiede auf den Anstrich. 2009 gestaltete die Royal Netherlands Air

Force mit der J-015 eine F-16AM für Solo Displays in einem sehr attraktiven orangefarbenen

Perlglanzlack mit einem roten Löwen, um die Niederlande bei Airshows im Ausland zu reprä-

sentieren. Das Flugzeug ist so populär, dass es 2013 immer noch seine Bemalung trägt. Dieses

berühmte F-16 Solo Display teilten sich im Laufe der Jahre verschiedene Piloten, Staffeln und

Luftwaffenstützpunkte (Leeuwarden und Volkel).

On 1971, General Dynamics took part on program for highly a manoeuvrable light interceptor-

fighter to replace the old F-104 Starfighters. The YF-16 Flown on first time on 2nd Febrary

1974 and was chosen one year later by the USAF, The main characteristics of the Falcon are

the large lonely intake under the nose, and the one-part smoked canopy who give perfect

visibility during close air combats

The F-16 developpement was quickly joined by NATO countries like the Belgium, Netherlands,

Danemark and Norway. The operational version designed F-16A, equiped with lot of newest

technologies like APG-66 Radar, and the fly by wire. It took the air on 1976, the twin seater

version designed F-16B flown on first time on 1977. The entered in service in Air Forces from

1979 as Interceptor and Fighter-Bomber.

In 1981, with so high of the performances of the F-16, the USAF added new capacities such as

the Beyond Visible Range combat capabilities, with the all weather capacity, low altitude flight

performances, it’s the F-16C Viper. Following those new capabilities the Europeans countries

using the A/B versions started a studying the possibilities to upgrade their older aircrafts.

Developed and tested between 1995 and 1997 by five countries, the modernization program

MLU (Mid-Life-Update), offered structural modification to increase the life of airframe and the

loads capabilities. Avionics updates are the highlights of program, using the newest systems.

The cockpit panel is completed with three MFD screen, and its background is painted black to

allow the use of night vision toggles.

Externally the main change of F-16 MLU (also called F-16AM / BM) is the four IFF antennas

front of cockpit. But the weapon system is highly modified permitting the load laser guided

bombs and laser designation pod, as far as the capabilities to use various Air to Air missiles for

short and Beyond Visual Ranges (BVR) and Reconnaissance Pod or electronic jammer pod.

From the first beginning of the program, the development also take care about the futures

capabilities of upgrades, during the 2000’s several systems and updates are still added to the

MLU aircrafts in aim to be most operational as possible. The newest versions of MLU F-16 allow

to load the newest AIM-9X, AIM-120D AMRAAM or IRIS-T missiles, and GPS guided bombs.

The F-16AM Falcon is still on of most used aircraft in NATO in Europe, Lot of foreign F-16 are

seen during airshows, but the lonely visual differences between them are the colors schemes.

On 2009 the Royal Netherlands Air Force, specially painted the F-16AM registered J-015 for

Solo Flying Display in very attractive colors, pearl metallic orange with red lion, representing

the Dutch country abroad in airshows. The aircraft is so popular that it is still kept painted in

2013. This famous solo display F-16 was shared to different pilots, squadron and bases

(Leeuwarden & Volkel) through the years.
