Schon während des Ersten Weltkrieges hatte sich für die Briten

der Einsatz von motorisierten Fahrzeugen im Wüstengebiet als

sehr erfolgreich erwiesen. Als Italien 1940 England den Krieg

erklärte, stellten die Italienischen Streitkräfte in Libyen eine

direkte Bedrohung für die Briten in Ägypten dar. General

Wavell, der Hauptkommandeur der Britischen Streitkräfte, war

sich dieser Bedrohung durchaus bewusst und beauftragte

daher R.A. Bagnald, motorisierte Spähtrupps zu gründen.

Diese Spähtrupps waren als die L.R.D.G. (Long Range Desert

Group) bekannt und setzten sich aus Freiwilligen aller

Streitkräfte zusammen. Hierzu gehörte keine bestimmte

Ausrüstung oder Uniform, die Soldaten trugen was immer zur

Zeit passend war. Im Mai 1942 nahm die L.R.D.G., neben dem

standardmäßigen Jeep

® CJ-2A, auch 30 Zentner schwere

Chevrolets mit Stahlkarosserie in Empfang, die sich im Einsatz

als außerordentlich erfolgreich erwiesen. Die Aufgaben der

L.R.D.G. bestanden darin, feindliche Rüstungs- und Truppen -

bewe gungen zu überwachen, sowie wagemutige, guerillaarti-

ge Überfälle hinter feindlichen Linien auf Flughäfen und Treib -

stoff anlagen durchzuführen.

During the First World War motor vehicles had already proved

very successful for the British in desert regions. When in 1940

Italy declared war on England, the Italian armed forces in Libya

represented a direct threat to the British in Egypt. General

Wavell, the Commander in Chief of the British armed forces

was well aware of this threat and therefore instructed R.A.

Bagnald to form motorized scouting patrols. These scouting

patrols were known as the L.R.D.G. (Long Range Desert

Group) and were composed of volunteers from all the armed

forces. They had no speciﬁc equipment or uniform; the soldiers

wore whatever was expedient at the time. In May 1942, in

addition to the standard Jeep

® CJ-2A, the L.R.D.G. took deliv-

ery of 30 cwt heavy Chevrolets with steel bodywork that

proved to be extremely successful in service. The missions of

the L.R.D.G. were to reconnoitre enemy movements of troops

and equipment and also to carry out daring guerilla type raids

on airports and fuel dumps behind enemy lines.
