Patronen.
Technische Daten:
Länge: 8,8 m
Gewicht: 47,6 t
Besatzung: 4 Mann
Bewaffnung: 90 mm M41 Kanone; 12,7 mm MG; 7,62 mm coax-MG
After the Second World War the M48 „Patton“ was the United States
rst essentially newly developed Main Battle Tank (MBT). There
were still many similarities to its M47 predecessor but this was only
intended as an interim solution. Both the M47 and the M48 were
part of the initial equipment of the newly formed Bundeswehr. In
the modifi ed A2 and A2C combat versions the M48 formed the
backbone of the German armoured forces until well into the 1970s.
Built in 1956 the A2 version still had a petrol engine. Compared to
its predecessor the combat range could be approximately doubled
by uprating the engine (fuel injected instead of naturally aspirated)
and installing larger fuel tanks. The most notable changes were
the all-new engine cover and the rear end-plate. On the A2C ver-
sion the tensioning wheel was also omitted. The Bundeswehr‘s fi rst
M48A2/A2C were used in original condition, but later Bundeswehr
specifi c modifi cations were added (model designation M48A2CG).
The M48A2/A2C had an optical rangefi nder, which was operated
by the commander. It was also the commanders task to operate
the 12.7mm MG in the commander’s cupola. The M48A2/A2C was
considered to be a Medium Battle Tank with suffi cient armour but
with the 90 mm cannon slightly under-gunned. Its potential how-
ever allowed further modifi cations to improve its combat effective-
ness. This led ultimately to the Bundeswehr version M48A2GA2.
The crews particularly appreciated its generous interior space and
the large ammunition supply amounting to 60 rounds.
