The plastic cap is for mulching, this cap should replace the drain pipe. normally you have the drain pipe, a quarter round plastic closing piece (see above) and a quarter round open piece (serves to mow long grass with ejector) Mowing without a collector is not possible, unless you close the contact (that collector closes, left side at the top itself) which is not recommended.
