Having git it back from my neighbour, I’ve found that keeping the tensioner as tight as possible seems to prevent chain coming off. I do, however, suspect that my neighbour was trying to cut stuff at too much of an angle and not at right-angles to the wood being cut (if this makes sense?). I mainly use it for cutting up old pallets. Hope this helps.
