Il passe toute sa vie dans la demeure familiale, attaché à
ses racines. Il s’éteint au Locle en 1826 après avoir travaillé
pendant près de 80 années à développer son art, l’art horloger.

Pendant plusieurs années, il consacre la plupart de son temps à
mettre au point un système de remontage automatique fiable
et robuste ( vers 1760 ). Dans cette idée, il y a certes la notion
utopique du mouvement perpétuel, mais surtout la notion
pratique qui permet d’éviter le fastidieux remontage à clef des
montres de poche. Vers 1770, Abraham-Louis Perrelet avait
déjà mis au point et monté plusieurs mouvements équipés
de masse de remontage dite « marteau », développant une
première version du mouvement à remontage auto-matique
appelé « mouvement à secousse ».
Quelques années plus tard – et après plusieurs problèmes
de résistance dus aux chocs subis par le mouvement lorsque
la masse «marteau» termine sa course – il met au point
un système de masse oscillante, fixée sur l’axe central du
mouvement et appelée communément aujourd’hui « le rotor ».

Pendant des années, il est un des maîtres horlogers des
Montagnes Neuchâteloises. Très adroit et pouvant compter
sur une sûreté de main extraordinaire, il reste actif jusqu’à la
fin de sa vie. Le Musée International d’Horlogerie de La Chaux-
de-Fonds (MIH) possède d’ailleurs ce qui est certainement l’une
des dernières pièces d’Abraham-Louis Perrelet, réalisée lorsqu’il
avait 96 ans...
Abraham-Louis Perrelet a beaucoup d’élèves, dont certains
lui feront honneur. Parmi ceux-ci, on distinguera notamment
Jacques-Frédéric Houriet, à qui l’on prête le titre de « père
de la chronométrie suisse » et qui est, durant deux ans, son
apprenti avant de partir travailler avec Julien Leroy à Paris.
Il est également en relations étroites avec Abraham-Louis
Breguet et Louis Berthoud. L’un de ses plus brillants élèves
sera sans conteste son petit-fils, Louis-Frédéric Perrelet.

Le flambeau du génie horloger s’est transmis d’Abraham-Louis
à son petit fils, Louis-Frédéric Perrelet. Celui-ci est né près du
Locle le 14 mai 1781.
Dès son plus jeune âge il manifeste une grande attirance pour
la mécanique et les mathématiques. Devenu très habile ouvrier
dans l’atelier de son grand-père, Louis-Frédéric quitte Le Locle
pour Paris afin de parfaire son instruction. Abraham-Louis
