Louis Breguet, illustre horloger, l’engage dans ses ateliers et
le forme à la fabrication de pièces compliquées.
Le début de sa carrière indépendante est marqué par
l’invention d’une pendule astronomique qu’il avait conçue
en 1815. Cette pendule fut présentée à l’Exposition de 1823
où elle obtint un grand succès.
Elle fut récompensée d’une médaille d’argent et devient
propriété du roi Louis XVIII.
Dès lors il va de succès en succès et devient l’un des horlo-
gers de trois Rois de France : Louis XVIII, Charles X et Louis-
Philippe.
Parmi ses inventions, appliquées des horloges marines aux
instruments de mesure, il fait breveter en 1827 un compteur
chronomètre avec fonction rattrapante. Les pièces qu’il
fabrique pour l’exposition de 1834 lui valent un honneur
suprême : il est consacré Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur,
en récompense de son talent et de sa persévérance.
Louis-Frédéric s’engage également dans la formation des
jeunes horlogers.
Il veut publier un traité d’horlogerie à l’intention des jeunes
élèves mais sa santé ne lui permet malheureusement pas de
mener ce projet à terme. Il s’éteint en janvier 1854.
Une grande partie des pièces de musées et de collections
privées portant la signature des Perrelet sont de la main de
Louis-Frédéric ; ces montres, uniques, sont les témoignages
vivants du savoir-faire éblouissant de l’époque.
