Informationen zum Vorbild
Ab dem Jahr 1913 wurden die Lokomotiven der Preußischen Gattung
T 161 von der Firma Schwartzkopff geliefert. Bereits 1906 waren fünffach
gekuppelte Tenderlokomotiven von der Königlichen Eisenbahndirektion Erfurt
verlangt worden, um den wachsenden Betrieb auf den Steilstrecken Thü-
ringens - mit 33‰ Steigung und 200 m Radius - meistern zu können. Da die
zunächst gelieferten Maschinen der Gattung T 16 in den Fahreigenschaften
nicht zufriedenstellend liefen, baute man diese um und beschaffte ab 1916
nur noch die Gattung T 161. Auffälliger Unterschied zur T 16 ist der auf dem
Kesselscheitel aufgesetzte Oberflächenvorwärmer Bauart Knorr. Die T 161
war mit 17 t Achsfahrmasse die leistungsfähigste Rangier- und Steilrampen-
maschine Preußens. Sie wurde oft im Nachschubbetrieb auf Steilstrecken
eingesetzt, um schweren Schnellzügen „über den Berg“ zu helfen.
In den 20er Jahren wurden bei der Deutschen Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft
Änderungen vorgenommen, auffällig war der Tausch von Stangen- gegen
Hülsenpuffer und der Anbau eines Dampf-Turbogenerators für die elektri-
sche Beleuchtung.
Die jetzt als BR 94 bezeichnete Tenderlok war in der Lage, in der Ebene
Zuggewichte von 1800 t mit 40 km/h und bei 25‰-Steigung noch 280 t mit
20 km/h zu bewältigen.
Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg übernahm die DB noch mindestens 670 Loko
-
motiven der BR 94.5-17, die DR im Osten etwa 250 Stück in ihren Bestand.
Ab 1968 wurden davon noch 144 Lokomotiven in die EDV-Nummer 094 um-
gezeichnet. 1973 wurden aber dann die letzten Maschinen ausgemustert,
8 Stück sind von beiden deutschen Bahnverwaltungen erhalten geblieben;
teilweise als Denkmalloks, im Privatbesitz und im DDM Neuenmarkt-Wirs-
berg, VM Nürnberg und BEM Nördlingen ausgestellt.
Information about the prototype
The Prussian class T 161 locomotives were delivered starting in 1913 by the
firm of Schwartzkopff. Tank locomotives with five coupled driving axles had
been wanted by the Erfurt Royal Railroad District as early as 1906 in order
to be able to master the growing traffic on the steep lines in Thuringia
– with 3.3% grades and 200 meter radius curves. Since the class T 16 units
initially delivered did not have satisfactory running characteristics, they
were rebuilt and from 1916 only the class T 161 was built. A noticeable
difference compared to the class T 16 was the Knorr design surface pre-
heater mounted on the top of the boiler. The class T 161 had a 17 metric
ton axle load and was the most powerful switch engine and locomotive for
steep grades in Prussia. It was often used for pusher service on steeply
graded routes in order to help heavy express trains „over the hill“.
In the Twenties changes were underway at the German State Railroad
Company. Noticeable was the change from open to enclosed buffers and
the installation of steam turbo-generators for electric lighting.
This tank locomotive was now designated as the class 94 and was able to
pull train weights on level track of 1,800 metric tons at 40 km/h / 25 mph and
280 metric tons at 20 km/h / 13 mph on a 2.5% grade.
After World War II, the DB acquired at least 670 units of the class 94.5-17,
and the DR in East Germany had about 250 units on its roster. From 1968
there were still 144 locomotives of this total reclassified with the com

puter designation of 094. In 1973, the last units were retired; 8 units were
preserved by both German railroads, partially as memorial locomotives, in
private ownership, and on display at the DDM in Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg, the
Transportation Museum in Nürnberg, and the Bavarian Railroad Museum
in Nördlingen.
