DISCOVERING
THE BRAIN
The brain is one of our most powerful organs.
It is the seat of thought and the centre that controls our
body. It allows us to learn, smell fragrances, hear
noises and experience emotions, but also controls
actions we are unaware of, like breathing! It is a truly
fascinating organ and also the most mysterious one: it has
been the object of many studies, but we still fail to properly
understand how it works. Have you ever asked yourself this
question? The brain consists of a jelly-like mass, it is full of
folds like a walnut’s kernel and it weighs almost one and a half
kilograms! It is made up of special cells called neurons, which are
connected to one another and with the rest of the body by nerves.
Did you know that the brain has specialised areas for managing its several dierent
tasks? There are four such areas, or lobes: frontal, parietal, temporal and occipital.
Each one is responsible for dierent functions.
OCCIPITAL LOBE: it is
responsible for sight, but
also posture and balance.
AN ULTRA-SPECIALISED CENTRE
CREATE YOUR SUPER-BRAIN OUT OF LUDOGEL!
Take the mould of the brain and the
LudoGel supplied with the kit.
LudoGel is a special super-fun material
which you will need to create the brain
and the spinal cord (which you will use
in the next pages).
Find a suitable container for melting the
LudoGel over a bain-marie.
If the container has a spout, it will be
easier to ll the mould.
The LudoGel block can be easily cut into
pieces to adapt it to the container you
have found.
WARNING! For safety reasons, the delicate
operation of dissolving the LudoGel should be
performed by an adult.
FRONTAL LOBE:
it is responsible
for movement,
speech and
emotions, and also
for creating
thoughts.
PARIETAL LOBE: it processes
stimuli relating to touch,
taste, temperature and
pain.
TEMPORAL LOBE: it manages
sounds and memory, and it
is also where instincts are
developed.
CEREBELLUM: it coordinates
movement and balance,
and it is also involved in the
cognitive functions.
