I just figured it out - to disable alarm 1, press and release button Al/Vol 1 (which will display the time that is currently set for waking up) and then press and release button Al/Vol 1 again. That will disable alarm 1 if it was turned on. For alarm 2, it's the same process, but with button Al/Vol 2.
